The Gospel

What is the gospel? Throughout the pages of the Bible, we see this term mentioned, but what does it mean? In a general sense, it means “good news,” but the Word of God tells us specifically what this means.

I Corinthians 15:1,3-4: Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you…For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the
scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

So, the gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. At Easter time, we often think about these events and consider the fact that Jesus came to die for our sins. However, this knowledge does not mean that we are automatically saved. We must obey the gospel. When the Jews heard the gospel, they did not believe and obey it. Consequently, they missed out on the benefits of the gospel.

Hebrews 4:2: For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

To obey the gospel, we must identify with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Jesus died on Calvary; we repent and die to sin. Jesus was buried in a tomb; we are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Jesus rose again on the third day; we receive the Holy Ghost and rise to walk in newness of life.

Acts 2:38: Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

If you have not had this experience, God has more for you. The gospel is more than just a story - it is a real way of life that is more relevant today than ever. Truly this is “good news” to all who believe and obey it.
